
Now if I change the display name at, it shows in the mail app account. Now in the mail app accounts, the display name is grayed out whereas before, it would let me type over it even if it wouldn't actually save the changes. And now new email has the right display name.

Outlook for Mac does support iCloud Mail. Outlook for Mac does not support Apple iCloud calendar (CalDAV) and contact (CardDAV) synchronization. To fix the issue, I had to delete the mail account, which, since it was the iCloud account, had to delete the iCloud account in preferences. In fact, if I changed the name in, it would show the change in the mac iCloud preferences but still not in the mail app. Check the System Status page to see if there are any known issues affecting iCloud Mail, Contacts, or Calendars.

If you dont use iCloud for Windows, set up two-factor authentication and sign in to Outlook with your Apple ID user name and an app-specific password.

If I tried changing the display name in the mail app, the settings popup would just hang. Sign in to iCloud for Windows with your Apple ID. As Microsoft tells it, all you have to do is add an account, give the email address and password and Outlook will handle the rest. Now Outlook 365 for Mac with the new interface can automatically setup a synchronization with iCloud account. I had this same issue, email was correct but display name was wrong. Outlook for Mac has always been able to link with iCloud using IMAP. iCloud recognizes the, me.com, or mac.com email address domains as iCloud accounts.
